Science

Mrs. Wahr will take the students on an adventure in science this year as they travel through space (learning about planets, the solar system, and other galactic bodies), learn about motion and force (magnetism, simple machines, gravity, electricity, etc.), and plant and animal life (classification, behaviors, needs, the human body).  In addition, the students’ research writing project will be completed with me when we study the human body.  The children are familiar with the Battle Creek Math and Science Curriculum from previous years.  We will be using the scientific method approach doing experiments almost daily as we ask questions and find answers about the world around us.  This method will also be used by students when they do their Science Fair project in the spring.  The students will be expected to bring their science journal (provided) to class each day and to record information as they test and observe.  All experiments are done with partners or in groups up to four students.   Cooperation, listening skills, and following directions are reinforced and assessed.  Occasionally, there will be tests over about 4-6 lessons.  Students will always be provided a study sheet and ample time to prepare.  All test dates will be posted on our calendar.   Very seldom will the students have homework in science other than occasional vocabulary assignments.  Requests will be made at different times of the school year for simple household items that we need for our experiments.  ‘These include:  plastic lids, paper towel cardboard rolls, etc.  If a child is absent he/she is expected to get journal entry information from another student.  Absent students can not make-up experiments due to the materials needed and the instruction required.  Good attendance is the key to success!
