Spring Break Update

Sorry, they have decided to cancel Spring break this year.  There is just too much to learn, so you will have to come to school next week.

APRIL FOOLS!!!

In all seriousness, I hope everyone has a fantastic break.  There will be no tropical beaches for me this spring…Mr. Venlet and I are staying home.  I hope to be able to relax a lot, though!  If you go on vacation, be safe and have fun – and don’t forget to bring the warm weather back with you :)

See you on April 12!

February 10, 2010: SNOW DAY!

I hope you are all enjoying your day off of school!  I just wanted to remind you all of your social studies assignment that is due Thursday when you return to school.  You should be turning in your “letter about the Midwest”~ a 5 paragraph letter including an introduction paragraph, 3 body paragraphs explaining your favorite three places in the Midwest, and a conclusion paragraph.  Be sure to use good word choice!!

Have a wonderful Wednesday!!!

The Midwest Region

We have been learning recently about the Midwest Region of the United States.  As we “travel” through the Midwest, we will stop at 9 places of interest.  Here are links to websites that we have visited about each place:

St. Louis Arch

Dodge City, Kansas

Mt. Rushmore

Soo Locks

Soo Locks 2

Detroit

Wrigley Field

Happy Wednesday!  Coming home with your child today are QSP Magazine subscription postcard packets.  Our school has done this before, so many of you are familiar with it already.  In case you aren’t, a letter to parents will be coming home along with the postcard packets that explains everything.

Students have until FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 5 to complete the postcard packet and bring it back to school.  They don’t have to go door to door, collect money, or pick up merchandise for this fundraiser!  After filling out the packet and returning it to school, the company does the rest of the work!

Prizes are as follows:

  1. For filling out the packet completely and returning it to school by Friday,  students will receive “Magic Eye” beam light glasses (very cool!)
  2. Every child that turns in a postcard packet will also be entered in a drawing to win 1 of 10 gift certificates for “skin its” (custom-made covers for cell phones, computers, Nintendo DS, etc.)
  3. If 60% of our class participates, our classroom will receive a free book!

If you have any questions, just let me know!  Have a great Wednesday!

January 29, 2010

We finally made it through January and the end of the first semester/2nd marking period!  I have added this week’s newsletter to the “newsletters” page and hope you all get a chance to look at it.

I also made it through my first week of basketball and it’s been going great.  Remember that I will be leaving school immediately after dismissal, so if you leave a message on my phone or email me, I probably won’t get to it until the following day.  Thanks for understanding.

If you have any questions about next week or those report cards that went home this week, let me know.

Have a wonderful weekend!!!!

Math Websites…

I am adding a page of math website links that were recommended by our math coach, Mrs. Kosten.  Please feel free to browse and try them out!  They are great resources!

January 11, 2010

Today in Social Studies we went on a boat tour of three places in the Southeast region of the United States.  We learned about Everglades National Park, JFK Space Center, and Jamestown, Virginia.  Here are links to websites about each:

By the way, Math practice 5-1 and cursive pages 23-24 are due tomorrow!

Have a wonderful night!

Friday, January 8, 2010

I hope everyone had a wonderful first week back.  I am not going to lie, it wasn’t that easy getting out of bed those first few days, but once I got rolling it was much better.

The new building is awesome.  We were especially pleased Tuesday and Friday when we didn’t have to put on coats, boots, hats and gloves to travel outside for our enrichment classes.  All the classes are in this building now!

The newsletter coming home today highlights the events coming up, but it doesn’t hurt to mention it again here.  The South Elementary Open House will be Tuesday, January 19 from 5:30 – 7:00 PM.  I hope to see many of you there!

You can find today’s newsletter on the “Newsletters” page.  Any questions, please comment, send an email, or a note!  Happy Friday!

4 Snow Days?!?!

I almost can’t believe it myself!

I hope you are all enjoying your time with your families.  Hopefully the snow days this past week didn’t mess up your daycare and work schedules, I know that can be a pain.

As we approach our final week at East Elementary, I want to make sure parents are prepared for the many changes coming our way.  Here are some things to remember for this week and the coming weeks ahead:

  1. Monday we will be taking our spelling test and math test, which were originally planned for last week.  Students should have brought home the math worksheets (Chapter 3, Practice A, B, and C) on Tuesday.  I told them if they get these signed, they will receive extra credit on the test.  Please study with children and make sure they are ready for the test Monday!
  2. Tuesday is our class party.  We will begin at 2:15 P.M.  Students that are bringing treats for the party should have received a newsletter early last week.  Also remember to bring a gently-used chapter book for our book exchange.  These should be wrapped!
  3. Wednesday we will be doing some moving things in the morning.  In the afternoon, we will be watching a movie.  I originally planned for The City of Ember, but we haven’t finished the book yet, so that is still up in the air.  If we can’t get the book done in time, I will select a different movie.
  4. If any parents are still interested in helping with the move, I would still love any help Wednesday after school.  Let me know either by giving me a call, emailing me, or making a comment on this post.  I appreciate it so much!
  5. Our new classroom number is 9, and my new classroom phone number is (616) 997-3137.  I will hopefully have a new voicemail recording at that number next week.
  6. Thank you for your patience during this crazy time!  I appreciate you all so much!

Now cross your fingers that there are no snow days this week!!!!

We tried something a bit different yesterday.  The kids all worked on their cursive in the morning and it was due today.  I am hoping it cuts down on the confusion about when things are due.  Spelling will always be due at the end of the week, but now cursive will be due the day after I assign it.

Homework tonight will be math practice 3-7 (subtracting) and the vocabulary practice p. 52.  These are both due Wednesday!  Spelling p. 47-49 is due Friday.

Have a great week everyone!
