Introduction to Teaching
This course is for members of our Senior class who are interested in finding out more about the field of education before going off to college. Students will spend the first marking period of this class learning about and practicing the art of teaching. Their second marking period will be spent putting what they learned into practice as they go to work as interns in our junior high and elementary classrooms on campus.

Lesson: Begin class with remembrance of 9/11 with discussion of what transpired that day for CHS. Continue film: Stand and Deliver.

Friday, September 9th, 2011
Lesson: Building on discussion of good and bad qualities teachers might have, introduce students to film, Stand and Deliver, which tells the story of Jamie Escalante, a remarkable teacher from Los Angeles who helped his impoverished students achieve greatness.
Handout: Good/Bad Qualities of Jamie Escalante from the film (to be collected upon film’s completion)
Homework: Begin thinking about what you can use from Mr. Escalante’s methods in the classroom.

Lesson: The Good, The Bad, The Ugly: get student assessments on good and bad qualities of teachers they have had over the years and discuss. Also, answer any questions about the profession of teaching that students might have.

Tuesday, September 6th, 2011
Lesson: Introduction to the course, 3 x 5 cards, Explain course procedures, including getting teaching preferences for second marking period from students, go over and assess reasons for interest in teaching.
