Program Basics and Goals

Moline Christian School

Kindergarten Program

2009-2010

What do we learn in Kindergarten?

The first part of the school year is an adjustment period. Each child will become comfortable with the classroom, the teacher, and their peers in their own time.  In order to help this process along children are encouraged to sing together, listen to stories, work cooperatively in groups, and construct various forms of artwork.  All of these activities are designed to help each child’s individual strengths and gifts shine!  Before long, children become adjusted and are comfortable enough to begin the exciting journey that is kindergarten!

As the adjustment period develops and progress is made, we gradually shift into our program of first grade readiness. This program includes the following subjects:

Bible:  Christian Schools International

Our CSI Bible curriculum teaches simple Bible stories that encourage children to apply the lessons in the Bible to their daily walk with Christ. Students will be able to relate to Bible stories through the use of crafts, songs, and skits. In addition, students will have the opportunity to practice Bible memorization so that they may have His Word in their hearts.

Reading/Language Arts:  Houghton Mifflin

Our Houghton Mifflin reading curriculum is designed with the individual child in mind.  Each child comes to kindergarten with their own set of skills and abilities.  The reading curriculum will meet each child where they are in terms of their abilities.  An integral part of our reading curriculum is meeting a new Alpha-Friend each week!  The Alpha-Friends help us along our reading journey in many ways.  Reading becomes a natural process as the students begin to associate each letter in the alphabet with an animal, each animal with a sound, and each sound with a motion.  In addition to learning individual sounds, students will begin to sound out words, work with sight words, and learn many essential literacy skills to help them begin to read!

Writing

Our writing curriculum coincides and supports our Houghton Mifflin reading curriculum in many ways.  Children learn proper pencil grip and essential writing strokes to make writing a fun process.  Students use many writing tools and are involved in a variety of writing activities that encourage proper sentence formation and imagination! Students are encouraged to use both uppercase and lowercase letters with the Zaner-Bloser Handwriting system which coincides better with our reading curriculum.

Math:  Scott Foresman

The goal our math curriculum is to develop mathematical skills through daily hands-on activities in the concrete and abstract stages of learning.  Through such experiences, students will discover the wonderful order that God provides in our world as well as realize that math is a necessary basic life skill.  Our math curriculum consists of individual, group, and partner hands-on activities performed throughout the day.

Science

The goal of our science curriculum is to help students learn about the world that God has created through hands-on experiences that allow them to observe, question, experiment, measure, and draw conclusions.  Through these activities, children will discover the many absolutes about our world and how amazing God really is!

Art

The goal of the art curriculum is to encourage the students to use the creative gifts they have received from God in an imaginative way!  Students will use art to respond to literature, connect with Bible stories, increase their math skills, and learn the basic shapes used for drawing many objects.  Students also have the opportunity to take pride in their work through the use of a variety of media.

In addition to the above programs our kindergarten curriculum includes weekly instruction in music, computers, and physical education.
